말밤 [명] 마름. ☞ 말암. 말왐 ¶ 芰實鄕名末栗 (鄕藥採取月令 十二月). ► 말밤 > [ㅂ>ᄫ] > 말왐 > 말암 > 마름	말밤은 '마름'의 원말이다. 마름이란 어느 한해살이 물풀 또는 그 열매를 이른다. 한자로 능실(菱實) 또는 기실(芰實)로 표기되었던 마름 열매는 밤맛은 나는데 아무래도 '하찮은 밤'이라는 뜻으로, 속되게 또는 알기 슆게, '말율(末栗)'이라 한자로 적고 '말밤'이라고 순우리말로도 읽었다. '말밤'의 /ㅂ/이 불안정한 /ᄫ/으로 바뀌고 이내 도태되는 과정이 왜 그랬는지는 알 수 없다. 아마 주된 동기는 음편 때문이었을 것이다.
ㅁㅏㄹᄫㅏㅁ (말ㅂ암, 말밤) [명] 마름쇠. ☞ 마름쇠 ¶ 釒疾釒梨ㄴ·ㄴ 말ᄫㅏ미라 (月釋21:80).	말밤은 마름열매와 함께 마름쇠도 뜻했다. 영어 caltrop가 그렇다. 중국어 蒺藜는 마름과는 다른 열매이면서 마름쇠를 뜻한다.
